What new patients most often ask before their first visit.
Acupuncture uses ultra-thin, hair-fine needles — much smaller than the needles used for injections or blood draws. Most patients feel only a light tap or a dull "energy" sensation at the needle site. Many actually fall asleep during treatment.
Most patients notice improvement within 1–3 sessions. Acute issues like recent sports injuries or sudden back pain often resolve in 1–3 visits. Chronic conditions (years of pain, scoliosis, fibromyalgia) typically need a series of 6–12 sessions for lasting results.
Dr. Yu builds a personalized recovery plan after your first evaluation, so you'll know what to expect.

Yes. We use single-use, sterile, FDA-regulated needles. Dr. Yu Yu is NCCAOM nationally certified and Virginia Medical Board licensed, with over 20 years of clinical practice. Side effects are rare and typically mild (slight bruising or brief lightheadedness).
No — Virginia law allows patients to see a licensed acupuncturist directly without a referral. However, if your insurance plan requires a referral for acupuncture coverage, please check with your insurer first.
First visits run 60–90 minutes and include a thorough evaluation, diagnosis, and your initial treatment. Follow-up sessions are typically 45–60 minutes.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that lets us access your arms and lower legs. Eat a light meal beforehand — don't come on an empty stomach. If you have recent imaging (MRI, X-ray) or medical reports related to your condition, please bring them or send them ahead.
